Comparison isnt a claim of plagiarism or unoriginality. Our art is a culmination of inspirations and cultural osmosis, im not going to pretend they were birthed pure and fully formed like Athena from the head of zeus

Imho i think getting hung up on otherwise complimentary/kind comments on your art because someone said it reminded them of another piece of art is really, really insecure.
They said it "reminds" them of another thing because they -like it-.
Huge agreement with all of this. It's fun to see other people's interpretations/approaches on the same things I enjoy making too.
It has to be strangely isolating for someone to live in a crafted bubble of pretending nobody else creates (or is allowed to create) similar things to them...
Yeah someone saying "this reminds me of (x) and that sucks!" Is obviously being a dick! Its not the comparison that sucks, they just want to insult you!
But someone saying "aaaaa this reminds me of (thing they love)!" Is just such a simple, basic way we as people express love for things!
YESSS exactly! If someones being a dick its cos they're a dick exactly xD I never understood discouraging comparisons tho, some people are just simple in how they show appreciation of new stuff and thats okay, i love it. :))
And esp neurodiverse people, sometimes the one way alot of us can relate to something outside of our normal media is to relate it to what we already enjoy for example. It can be mean to discourage this!
really trying to lighten up about it but I can only handle so many "lol is that James from Team Rocket" comments. literally redesigned the character because people were saying it so much and it just stopped being cute/funny. maybe it is insecurity but it made me feel genuinely horrible after a while
that said, I don't mind when people compare my OCs to other characters when it's in an OBVIOUSLY complimentary manner. but the weird incredulity some people have about it can really get to me, not to mention the ones who are just straight-up trolling lmao
it's really funny to me when artists get so precious about their OCs. I'm literally writing a book-length retrospective about my game because I'm so desperate for people to know the full ingredient list for my blorbos
