Could have been an animal reservoir (or a human one)... but the variants are more about what the strongest signals are- none can really be confirmed to be "gone", there's just lots more active cases of other variants.

some get suppressed by faster growing variants…but i dont think they all phase out permanently. especially due to viral reservoirs and viral persistence. i do wonder how much of our wastewater is due to viral persistence vs how much is circulating via contagion.
