I own the 3 platforms but Xbox is like most expensive it can be $240 a year if you get GamePass Ultimate and Sony most expensive Plus can be $120 per year but I would get the cheaper plans if I actually invest in them

Xbox Live on the 360 was SO good compared to struggling to play an online game on the Wii which was a joke. XBL provided matchmaking services and voice chat (so devs didn't make a hodgepodge system of their own) and I think that's worth paying for tbh when it makes the experience so much smoother

The server costs have to come from somewhere. Do you think the console maker should cover the cost of the servers, it should be individualized and provided by game studios, or should be included in the original cost of the console?

Generally they don't actually host the game servers FYI. Each individual dev/publisher does that if using dedicated servers, otherwise it's peer to peer (someone's console is hosting the match)

Plenty of games do it, but it’s not most of the time. The biggest multiplayer games are still server based, and even the p2p is often brokered in various forms. The features we take for granted, like chat, friends, etc cost as well. They’re definitely profiting but there are real costs.

I mean... The computing infrastructure for processing multiplayer isn't cheap. They need to recoup it somehow. You could argue making games more expensive, but then folks would just complain about that too.

If a game has decided servers, they're provided by that company not MS (and are taken away a few years later). Otherwise a lot of multiplayer on Xbox is peer to peer and they just matchmake you. But I still think that's worth it or was on the 360.

If Microsoft had just gotten rid of paid online in 2020 today they would have been on (at least) equal footing with PS. During the pandemic, their consoles (especially Series S) were much more widely available. Imagine how much of an easier sell they would have been if you could play online for free

This is why PC gaming has always won with me over consoles.

Just Dance is the only reason I touch one, and they've required me to upgrade my console to play Unlimited now.

Console gaming is all a money grab imo.
