granted, we have CotW releasing soon, with only 14 characters in its roster. That seems wack to me, too.

and Strive only had 15 at launch, although by the time Elphelt came out halfway through Season 3, it had more characters than any GG game has ever had. Now it's on S4.

and to be clear, the reason 4's console launch roster was so big is because that was the CONSOLE launch.

The actual arcade launch a year prior only had 17 characters.

for being the revival of the series, I get it. Play the hits, get those core World Warriors in, and a few new faces to show that we're Hip and New and Fresh.

Then the console release added Alpha characters, and Super added SF3 characters, and by AE and Ultra they were just having fun with it.

I wish the pace was faster for sure, but I think the sf6 roster was rather reasonable size-wise? The problem for me at least was that the launch roster was a double whammy of 3 dyed in the wool shotos and mostly classic world warriors. Felt very “been there done that” right from the jump.

My main issue with the roster is the lack of New Gen characters. First game to take place after sf3 and capcom had zero interest in progressing any of them at launch.

I would have liked that too. On the flip side, 5 clearly had a troubled launch, and whatever our misgivings are as long-time fans SF6 clearly did well at launch so maybe they were right to play it safe.

well SF5 was also rushed to meet the fiscal year release , SF6 doing well was more it being massively feature complete and less about the returning roster imo

hell the new fans seem to care way more about luke, jamie, AKI etc (which is good!)

Honda and Dhalsim keep taking slots of more deserving characters and JP wasn't really needed if they were going to bring Bison back so soon. SF7 needs to be the first SF game that doesn't rely on World Warriors nostalgia to progress

Truth be told, they tried that with SF3 and while I know it’s different times and the franchise is in a healthier place… New Generation almost killed the franchise. World Warriors are kind of a necessary evil I’m afraid.

Though I do agree JP is a war criminal and should be remove (Guile bias)

I actually like all the WW, I just don’t like when they’re frontloaded. I like to see them all -eventually- but not necessarily right out the gate. I also think the franchise does a good job showcasing weird/eccentric characters on a long enough time scale (4 and 5 both have massive rosters).

this is why May, despite having fucking shit-all to do story-wise in Strive, was base roster, but Jack-O, who was extremely important, was DLC
