A recent Genshin Impact update reveals yet another striking actor has been recast.

Here is the apathy it receives in response.

Shame on anyone who thinks the strike would ever “become an invalid reason” in this context.

These people are fighting for AI protections.

Nope! Studios are not struck. Projects are. The studio (or agency) has nothing to do with it.

So this is...confusing. What this seems to indicate is that, because Genshin was working with a company before that was not willing to work with SAG-AFTRA, but moved to a company that is, there's no means of reclassification of their project that occurs? Or am I not understanding that correctly?

Unfortunately that’s not how it is. Projects become union by signing an agreement that ensures they afford the actors on that specific protections. A project moving studios doesn’t mean anything: it’s still non-union until it signs. Hope this helps!

Actually, no, that still doesn't make sense to me, because the project was non-union in the first place. And John wasn't refusing to work because he was in the union, but as a solidarity measure, and Genshin new studio is an IMA signatory. So is there more to this I'm not understanding?

There's no such thing as a studio being "an IMA signatory". Studios are not struck; projects are (and hoyo games are struck by virtue of being non-union in the first place). Following your logic, if a new studio was a signatory then Genshin would now be a union project - and it is still not.

And shouldn't you, like...*know* that Genshin was non-union before the strike? And the only reason Genshin was in the strike was because the studio was Formosa? So how does firing the studio and hiring one that's an IMA signatory not result in some kind of change?

I don't "know that" because that's not true. Formosa is on the bargaining committee for the negotiations but Genshin is an affected project because it was and remains a title that didn't sign the agreeement, and non-union performers were encouraged to withhold work if they could out of solidarity.

Not quite - they wouldn’t be struck after the strike (because it would be over) and to be clear they are not even “struck” now - not working them is out of solidarity by the actors working them who want these protections.

They would, however, definitely be less safe than union games that have them.

This is where my confusion comes from as every actor is talking about the strike and that it should become union, but no body is talking about how, or if any, the strike negotiation have effect on non union games

The short version is that the strike is only against union projects that have not signed the new agreements. However, non-union titles (which union actors are not supposed to work anyway) were encouraged to have work withheld in solidarity to help make a stand industry wide for these protections.

Genshin fans seem to have a parasocial relationship with Hoyo. They don't seem to understand that a company is not a person.

Yes, they made a game that you love, but they don't love or care about YOU. All they care about is making money.

Since one of them who was on strike got replaced, that means any of them could be next, and that scares the hell outta me. I want this game to succeed, but at the same time I want what's best for those who make the game, and that most certainly includes the cast who brings these characters to life.

This sets an incredibly dangerous precedent in the industry as a whole, these companies are essentially saying either bend the knee or get replaced. And if this becomes commonplace for the game and more of them get replaced, then I can't in good conscience even want to play it if this gets worse.
