He's not entirely right or wrong on this one.
Dark Souls has a very western feel but is amazing.
Yakuza is very Japanese and also has its audience.
And games in the middle like Smash Bros Ultimate where western fans character picks were considered was better off for it

Which is not a problem in any way shape or form btw!
The only thing I was objecting to was the idea that western devs aren't making games that have souls-like mechanics which is just wrong.
Darksiders 3 is a stretch. It's closer to an old school God of War game than any souls game.
Or better yet, how does it have more of a western feel than Dragon Quest, the quintessential Japanese game?
All ill say is I found myself surprised to find out one day that Dark Souls was made by a Japanese studio. As was a few people ive had that conversation with. It doesnt immediately strike itself as japanese until you dig deep
Like... do you consider MGS1 western because it takes place in Alaska?
Being more "occidental" must be borne out of creators' interests and not corporative interests.
Dark Souls is still pretty japanese in its own way. It does not try to appeal occident directly... except maybe for Elden Ring hiring Martin.
Zelda, Dragon Quest, Souls games and fire emblem all drink from the same pool that is medieval fantasy, but all of them have very visible influences from japanese culture as well.
Demon's Souls is very much from the Monster Hunter, Phantasy Star Online, of Japanese multiplayer action with RPG inventories.
