Ohh! I am from Spain and when I was a child I went to a Catholic school and they marked us with that cross on our forehead. Pretty creepy when I think about that…

They did this to us at the catholic school all the way through high school. There was no way out unless you weren’t catholic, of which we had a token few. Greek Orthodox
I was older when I learned that the ashes come from last year’s Palm Sunday palms. That just strikes me as a weird detail
