1st, this was a huge effort by a very diverse team involving nine countries and both scientists and non-scientists. This work could not have been done without this broad range of perspectives, expertise, and experiences. A number of us are also immigrants to our current countries (including me) 2/n

2nd, this effort relied heavily on publicly available data, including earth observation data from both European and US satellites. Data from NOAA and NASA played an important role in this work. Collecting earth observation data and making it public is an incredibly important government service 3/n

3rd, this study looks at a recent major disaster. In order for effective disaster risk reduction, we need to understand the physical processes involved in these events. This is really important basic science that relies heavily on government funding mechanisms. 4/n

4th, The Teesta disaster resulted from climate change – without the rapid retreat of South Lhonak Glacier, this event would not have happened. These processes don’t care what we think or believe, and ignoring them will just continue to get people killed. 5/n

All of these things are obvious. I shouldn't have to say them. But here we are. Open, unbiased, government support of diverse science is key to progress. This can’t be repeated often enough. 6/6

oh, and by the way, I'm an NSF product, with a GRFP funded PhD. These investments into people at the very starts of their careers (postdocs too!) benefit science for many many years beyond the few years of the fellowship.
