The racism was blatant. Sheriffs called Black criminals as "gang-bangers". DeSantis called Black Lives Matter protesters "terrorists" who "burn down cities". He backing a school curriculum showing a positive side to slavery (the "useful" life skills slaves learned). 3/

The censorship in schools was appalling. I covered efforts to ban books about civil rights, gender identity, or anything sex-adjacent. The state government approved school materials from PragerU to teach kids American history from a more right-wing perspective. 4/

Speaking of schools, one expelled a Palestinian kid whose mom posted about the Israel/Palestine conflict on her personal Instagram. One tried to fire a principal who let a trans student play volleyball. Another openly belittled Black students about their test scores. 5/

Poverty was rampant. Even when the rest of the U.S. was bouncing back, inflation was at a record high in Tampa. Salaries for full-time jobs went as low as $35,000 a year. There was also a home insurance crisis as insurers straight up left the state. 6/

I heard from a lot of former Florida natives who said they were shocked and grieving over what their state had become.

I think a lot of Americans will share that view soon, and the stuff I covered in Florida only scratches the surface of what the architects of Project 2025 have in store. /End
