It’s the classic "Madonna-Whore" complex—when women are seen as either perfect, untouchable saints or corrupt, ruined sinners as if their bodies were a currency or commodity.
Deep-seated male insecurity.

Even though Shakespeare was writing in a patriarchal era, he seems to recognize the cruelty of male possessiveness and the unfair double standards women face. It’s a testament to how fragile male egos can be when they believe that women’s purity = their personal honour.
