Mucka Mania 10k in Wynne, Arkansas 2013. My high school bff challenged me to skip the 5K and do the 10k and said if I did the 10k he would do one too, so of course I did. It got me hooked on racing! That year I ran 1:15:05, next year same course I finished in 58:57. Wish I could run like that again.
Leicester marathon 1983, 19 yrs old, I hadn't ran before, I didn't do enough training, I knew nothing about fuelling during a race. 2laps. 1st lap was great, ran strong. 2nd lap was very slow & grim & v. painful. I said I'd never run a marathon again, it took until 2019 to do another. Done 10 now
I didn't know I was supposed to go behind the cone at the turnaround! I really thought, okay, I'm up to the cone, so I turn around. The volunteers at the turnaround were also confused at how I could possibly get that wrong. 😂
It was an out & back 5k in Florida while visiting the grandparents. I was 9 years old and got 1st in my age group (wonder if I was the only one in the age group? 🤭 )
Thanksgiving 2009. While losing weight and slowly becoming a runner, my daughter said we should run a 5k. I literally didn’t know what that was. I loved everything about it and it started me on my race journey that has led me to a race in every state.
I don't have pictures of my first race. But, here's a picture of me with my team from decades ago! (Third from the right, first year of high school cross country) #runchat
I believe it was October 2009 - a 5 KM on a chilly day in Toronto. I think it took me 35 mins, and I was so happy to have finished! I only started running that year. 😄
I was 50 years old, had never run even to the mailbox. A friend asked me to run a turkey trot and, not sure why, but I did. Never looked back and 13 years later, countless 5K's, couple of 10K's and Half's and loving it!
IOA Corporate 5K. I remember being at the then Citrus Bowl, now Camping World Stadium. Still don’t know this race is this in the afternoon in Orlando when it’s sweltering hot but it got me hooked on running.
My first race was a Half Marathon. I had never run before in my life. I did it to prove a point - that women can be road racers too - it’s not just a sport for men. I used a Couch to 5K app to train. I gave it my all. I had to finish! I struggled through it & I got myself over the finish line.
Brentwood Half Marathon, about two months before the 2003 London Marathon, which I’d unexpectedly been accepted onto via ballot about 9 months previously. Prior to the ballot acceptance, I had barely run since school, and that HM was the first time I managed that distance.
Mine was London Marathon 1997 - I was utterly clueless about training, I just ran at one pace but I broke four hours and could have kept going for another few miles.
I googled how to get into trail running, and one of the suggestions was to sign up for a race. I found a 5k trail race that weekend and prepared by running and mostly walking 5k. It was a fun time and the beginning of my new favorite outdoor sport!
