I know regulations like GDPR and AI Act are not perfect. They have pros and cons, like everything else in this world. I'd rather have a slower and steady progress that is solid –and fair, but that's a subjective term–, than a rapid and uncontrolled progress that wreaks havoc on everything in its way

It's definitely a mentality shift between the US (more company-centric) and the EU (more person-centric). It would require major cultural changes that won't happen —at least, not anytime soon.

I'm obviously not a lawyer but my understanding of GDPR is that you have to store EU users' data in the EU and you need to hire a data protection officer. That's prohibitively expensive for a single individual making a web app

From my non-lawyer understanding of GDPR: the Data Protection Officer (DPO) can be a trained employee, not necessarily an expensive additional person. Also, not all companies are required to have a DPO, it would depend on the size and type of data that they are processing.

This is an oversimplification, but sometimes dealing with GDPR could be reduced to "Do you really need that data? No? Then don't take it!" Companies think they need every piece of information from their users, and that's not true. Why does a puzzle app need access to PII, contacts, calls, emails...?

Again my non-lawyer understanding: it also highly depends on the scale and type of data. For example, if the company has 10 employees but deals with health data (which is considered special/sensitive), then it needs a person assigned as DPO.

But don't take legal (or any type of) advise from me 😅
