In the Trump 1 era, I filed a class action on behalf of peaceful protestors who were gassed, beaten, and shot by federal law enforcement officers. That litigation arose out of the BLM protests in Portland.

These cases are hard AF. And they can take years. Cases like this can swallow legal teams alive, especially those of us in small law firms. Cases like this take special skills and resources. Very few lawyers have the right mix of skills and resources to handle cases like this.

And when they don’t go quickly—most don’t—it can be easy to mistake the slow grind for lack of competence or skill.

All that said, the lawyers who dare to do these cases are heroes. But they are not necessarily saviors. Litigation will not save us—it’s merely one tool in our collective tool box.
