Can we really say a remake deserves a #GOTY nod though? Seems like a stretch time say that something that invokes nostalgia boners should be regarded as better than an original work.

Disregarding popular opinion for a moment, as that will always win out when discussing the market leader and their video games, I ask from a competitive standpoint: is it morally acceptable to give ff remake a nod at GOTY over something else original, esp. since it's not even a full game?

If this was a remaster, building on the foundations of an existing game (such as Crisis Core Reunion), then I’d accept the argument that the game lacks much of the design and technical originality. However, Rebirth is closely based on an existing story, but otherwise built from the ground up…

Same. I want it to win just to incentivize people to play it who might otherwise ignore the trilogy. Objectively, I think the Remake trilogy may wind up having one of the greatest narratives in gaming history once it's complete and will resonate with even more people if given the opportunity.
