The Academy issued a statement but wouldn’t support Hamdan Ballal publicly: “We were told that because other Palestinians were beaten up in the settler attack, it could be considered unrelated to the film, so they felt no need to respond.”
I saw. Absolutely shameful. If it was a Ukrainian filmmaker who’d won an Oscar their whole membership would be making statements and posting about it. Time for the double standards to end.
It’s abhorrent. Palestinian identity is the heart of the documentary and the fact that other Palestinians were beaten up is absolutely related to it. I doubt the Academy would stand up for Ukrainian filmmakers, considering the film they chose as Best Picture.
