I argued this exact point with a Trumper last week and her only response to it was “We’ll agree to disagree”. Morons, the lot of them. My reply back was “No, I absolutely do not agree to disagree on this issue. Our ability to live with nature is tantamount to our survival.”
Yeah, I never understood the arument against responding to climate change - which would make air, water, etc. cleaner and better. People are "pro-pollution"?
Asking someone "do you want cleaner air" is very very different than asking them "do you want to pay 20% more for everything in exchange for cleaner air"
Not saying my stance on it, just explaining the disconnect
Yep. They're not separating the issue. Even if they want to believe climate change is not man-made, they still ought to be able understand the concept of "pollution". 🤦♂️
I have had direct experience with people who aren't concerned with climate change but are very concerned about pollution. Would it more sense to return to the language of pollution to fight the bigger climate change battles? Is it easier to confront that concrete, visceral experience?
Yes! I think it sums up a failed strategy all around; words like "democracy," "climate change," etc. simply do not land. For example: the only things I quickly remember from the debate were "eating cats and dogs" and "bleeding out in the parking lot." That's where we need to be. Concrete. Visceral.
It feels like these people think that the junk that’s put in the air just disappears.
Real “if it doesn’t happen in my field of view it doesn’t happen” mentality…
I recall the days of driving from AZ to CA and many miles out from L.A. seeing thick dirty air on the horizon & thinking what the heck are we getting ready to drive into (?). Many don't have this point of reference to recall.
Sad that the word “ believe “ is even needed … let’s believe what a man in a weird robe says every sunday without question but lets not “ believe “ hard cold truly tested evidence. Ok.
And if you do believe it is emissions related then you need to focus your energies on China and developing economies. We can go to zero and it will not impact the overall level of emissions.
Bring back clean nuclear power before they start their disastrous clean air/EV/unreliable solar and wind power push. You need to build the power generation capabilities and grid before you transition over to electric. Cart before the horse does not work.
I remember back in the early 70s, the smog combined with the oppressive heat and humidity in DC Metro area made walking around unbearable. I’m not looking forward to going backwards
Yes! Nuclear all the way! It doesn't pollute the air and can provide magnitudes more energy than all other current power sources, potentially reducing energy costs. It will also reduce the number of infrastructure so large portions of land aren't covered.
4.2 million die prematurely every year from outdoor (ambient) air pollution.
3.8 million die from indoor air pollution.
7 million die in total from all sources of air pollution.
Imagine us. Developing clean and efficient and renewable energy thereby improving the lives of people for NOTHING. What craziness. Why would anyone want that?
I had a professor who was against clean air. He used to live in Houston and said the smell out there near all the oil refineries was the smell of money and he loved it. I, too, used to live in that region and I assure you, the smells of the petrochemical industry are not pleasant at all.
As a conservative I do believe in climate change. However, all we can do is aim to find alternative sources. Enforcing climate mandates before that happens is problematic. We have nothing else to use to sustain us. Wht hapens when nations like China continue to pollute and produce while we collapse?
Here’s the thing. Climate change is science, not a believe system. Anytime someone says, “I don’t believe in climate change” they really mean “I don’t understand the science.”
In the 1960s when we drove through Birmingham Ala on our way to Atlanta, GA, I remember how smoky it was. Poor air quality. In fact it was referred to as “Smoke City”.

That's ok, climate changes doesn't care about you either."
I thought of that after seeing more insane flooding over in the Mediterranean this morning.
YES.

Paying more taxes does not alter the climate.

Trump et al. are determined to destroy regulation and the administrative state.
Has the Park Service found a place to park all it's data and leave empty servers for 47?
We shall see what happens.
In most places. An inversion is an inversion.

Cynical politics is real. Always has been.
