The issue, as always, is getting people to click and engage. We have more knowledge freely accessible than any time in human history. Full MIT courses on literally everything, thu click of a button. Are people more educated now than before? (no)

imo online academia needs to be made for the medium - just recordings aren’t super competitive in the race for attention.
As someone who’s been a layperson still curious in learning, videos by @3blue1brown.com & @quantamagazine.bsky.social let me actually find beauty in math, for example
Like after graduating uni frustrated with math, I’m taking more math on the side for fun and to go back to school. It completely changed my perspective
That said I’m a nerd and have a high affinity for all this stuff already so 🤷🏾♂️ not sure how broadly applicable my experience is
I think the last part is key. Online access to education has certainly been useful for a subset of the population who is intrinsically motivated, but it's likely a substitute for other previously available means of getting that education (e.g., extension courses, library books).
Mmmm. I think that maybe online access can “activate” people with an affinity for education? I was reccomended @3blue1brown.com
by Youtube when I was totally done with school. Its an interesting thought.
imo tho the issue is actual accessibility of science itself. Science is too cloistered
imo I think the far bigger problem for academia is that journal publishers make reading academic knowledge completely inaccessible for the general public and civil society (outside of academia).
Speaking from experience, its hard to be engaged w/ science as a layperson. I dont have 10k per article

The public would be more engaged in science if we were allowed to be a part of it and it not be completely opaque
