Yes, I still have it. But haven't tried to boot it for many years. I had built a sampling oscilloscope from a kit from an electronics magazine. It connected to the parallell port on the Oric-1. I used them to decode IR-remote controls :)

Damn, you scratched an itch I have had a long time :) I have now found the photo copies of the oscilloscope plans. Need to dust off more stuff slowly and see if I can restart the Oric-1. Hopefully I can find the oscilloscope also. Find tapes, tapedeck and digitize the programs and so on

When I started university and got a HP48SX I realised I could do the same thing with the calculator in 4-bit Star machine language. The SX could only generate 32kHz carrier frequency thoug, but the GX could do 38kHz needed. Since it had IR in and out, I could replace Oric-1 + oscilliscope with GX

I remember that well, my mate had a VIC-20 (as known in the UK). Great little machine!
47870 was a bit of a lie as it included the high resolution screen RAM which wasn't usable from BASIC by default!

I’m a relative rookie - played on many computers / consoles with a 6502 in them (unknowingly) but only dabbled programming them after seeing Ben Eater’s series a few years ago. Wrote an emulator to cut out the faff of writing to the EEPROM all the time etc. So much fun!

I still regard myself as a rookie, but decided a few years ago to build a full functional 6502 homebrew machine on breadboard, and write all the software for it. It's an on-going hobby thing for me now!

The Oric was supposedly named after Orac, the super Computer in Blake's 7, they couldn't us Orac for copyright reasons.

The Oric was based on the Microtan 65 system that competed with the Acorn system 1, also 6502, The Acorn system 1 was seen on the Slave Computer in the last series of Blake's 7

I heard that story although seems to be alternative ideas that Oric was just an anagram of 'micro' but without the 'm' !!
But I prefer the Orac origin story much more of course!

Yup, still going strong since 1983. I've done awful things to it (not on purpose) but somehow she's still here - thank goodness because this assembly of plastic and silicon is priceless to me, more valuable than any family heirloom!

I had an Oric-1, probably my 5th or 6th computer self-build stuff (including a Sinclair ZX80).
At one point, I actually wrote a small OS for the Oric.
