screamingly radioactive. Don't get me wrong, it is not safe to stand next to it for prolongued periods of time. But you can stand 6 feet away from it with only wearing very basic protection (standard workers goggles, standard workers mask, a plastic suit and robber gloves/shoes) and take pictures,

While a damaged shield is concerning, if stuff would get out it would be bad, but not a worldwide climate disaster.

Yeah, back when the accident happened, I wouldn't have wanted to be near that reactor block. This was a death zone... for weeks. It was less problematic to get closer after two months or so. A reactor core can not sustain this type of radioactivity for long, but still... it wasn't ideal.
