Okay, I want you to watch this 1 minute clip I captured. It's from the 90's TV Show "Babylon 5", and the guy there explains to Mr. Garibaldi how dicatorical regimes gain power. It is not new - it is an old concept and it is well known how this shit works. It seems new to us now, but it isn't.

The whole thing is a farse. And when a TV show is prescisely calling the reasons so accurately: It must be well known, but a lot have forgotten.
Michael Straczynski was writing every episode out of necessity. The show has a notoriously tight budget and the arc was too interlocked to bring in freelancers.
That show damn near killed JMS.
