I played a bit in 2nd ed and the 3rd ed (CBT RPG) and have happy memories. The main reason I don't try to make time for it these days is that the "assumed game" (based around some kind of military unit) isn't the greatest for player agency - or even showing off the vastness of the setting.
I played AToW, and honestly, it was a disaster. The rules are confusing, the mechs aren’t particularly well mixed in with the game unless you use another systems’ mech rules, and my players went away from it feeling worse off than when they started. The best i can say for it is that the art is good
Most of what I end up doing is making characters, as there is nobody around to actually play a game with. If I was playing I would probably use 2nd edition rules.
played a lot of MW2e in the day & tried the new Destiny system and liked it.
Never played ATOW. When I read the rules a few years ago, it felt a lot like 3e (which I have a major aversion to), though cleaned up a bit. Like the Character Generation part was actualyl complete and doable. Unlike 3e.
I find character generation in ATOW smoother than 3rd edition and more complete than 2nd edition. I grew up with 1st edition and played that a lot with my brother

Never actually played though, so I’m curious what others have experienced.
