I can't wait till the lines/gaps will receive their own events so they could act as window splitters. But when I think of it, it'd be quite complicated.

would gap decorations help in any way to get zebra striping in css grids? 🤔 background + padding for each grid item is clunky and behaves differently than gaps at the outside grid edges

The "spanning-item" rule seems misnamed. I would have guessed with that name that the highlighted intersection would have a break since no items span it. If this is the intended behavior, maybe something like "max-length", "t-junction", or "dead-end" would be better.

Hmmm, on second thought, this is naming where the breaks are, not how long the lines are, so "spanning-item" does work.
