I'm for it as long as safeguards are in place to stop coercion. But one question raised recently is does it effect karmic/spiritual evolution to basically commit suicide rather than die at the allotted time?

Good question. If you are the one ending your own life and you are successful, was that the correct allotted time? The karmic lesson learnt may be for others to see your life cut short. It may be that you have learnt your lesson or completed this cycle's Great Work and it's time to move on...

I'm for dying with dignity after watching my mother suffer for her last 3 years. She would often hold my hand and ask how long it will be before she can leave the pain and suffering behind. I was with her when she died and it wasn't a good death.

100% for the choice. It's insanity to effectively force people to suffer indescribable pain and indignity, even when they're begging to be let go.
Our entire approach to palliative care is a deeply Christian one, where we MUST stay alive, and endure, stripped of autonomy over even our own bodies.

I think it's horrible what some chronically or terminally ill people are put through. However I am also very concerned about what some chronically or terminally ill, disabled, or 'undesirable' people might be put through, were assisted dying to be made easier to access.

At the moment, the Bill covers palliative patients with 6 months to live IIRC, so chronically ill or disabled people aren't part of the scope right now. But I can see the potential, and it's that potential that (I'm guessing) is what folks are concerned about.

Yeah, I agree. The concern is more how euthanasia might develop over time (Canada being a fairly controversial example) and how it might intersect with funding for care (which is already often falling below adequacy).

Having robust and rapid access to care is vital. We don't really want 'mercy killings' to happen just because it works out cheaper for the state. I'd rather Old Dai have a happy and content last 6 months with full care that costs more than him 'choosing' AD so he doesn't become a bother.
