I keep asking but no one has an answer; I'm not knocking this decision, I know in the past, this is the way to get attention for major problems as a last-ditch effort. But these are not normal times. Aren't they voluntarily giving up their position to someone who will just come in and be a yes man

Depends whether you can be sand in the gears and do some good, or if you’ll just be waving through violation after violation because the alternative is being fired. Even if the opportunity to do good is there, takes a hell of a lot of discipline and strength to keep your head down.

insinuations thrown at them in ways that can not be easily articulated in public. We live in a mafioso, russian KGB style situation now. and I wouldn't put it past them to have already been engaging in really dark tactics behind the scenes that are helping "influence" the decision to leave.

I've thought the same.
Here's what I've decided: after looking in the mirror & deciding what you can (& cannot) tolerate, you stand up & resign, letting the country know (in blistering terms WHY said action they're being asked to do is WRONG & IMMORAL).
The rest is up to US.

The thing that sickens me about people of honor in times like this is like thinking about the stupid and grotesque way people died on 911 or in mass shootings. That good people's lives are destroyed randomly by people suffering egos bigger than their heads can contain.

One of the findings of the Milgram Experiment is that it's individually more challenging to show courage and moral character, but that when someone else shows it, it's much easier to follow suit. Let us hope that this legal wave becomes a tidal wave.
