As someone who doesn't like DK, most Mario games, or puzzle platformers... I found this one delightful to play.

At first I thought "so: The arcade game but with better controls?" Then I kept playing and it kept surprising me. The team behind it put a lot of heart into it.

Donkey Kong 94 is brilliant. It pioneered a lot of the acrobatic jumping moves that went into Mario 64, it had so much animation and so many bespoke death effects for Mario.

And beyond that, I love the vibe of taking an early 80s arcade game and expanding it into a huge *adventure* with 90s sensibilities, but still retaining some of those archaic arcade quirks, like the squeaking sound of Mario walking and the "score" sound effect of leaping over an enemy.

Game Boy Donkey Kong deserves all the recognition and love. It really should have become a series of it's own with numerous sequels, but I imagine the bigger success of DK Country squashed any of those plans. At least we have Mario Vs. DK.
