Like I've mentioned a few times, I've been tackling a lot of backlog games so far this year. Among them have that Batman Arkham series. So far, I've completed Asylum and am currently playing through Arkham City. They're good, but I don't quite see what makes so many people love them. - ThreadSky

City is undeniably a great sequel that improves a lot from the first game, but I know a lot of people that really hold these games in high esteem, and I just don't quite see it.

They're solid games and I'm glad I'm playing through them, but I wouldn't say they're fantastic.

I think the answer is right there: they’re solid games. And in 2009, that there could be a solid game based on a preexisting property (let alone Batman) was unbelievable, given the amount of licensed shovelware we had gotten throughout the 2000s. Might be a “context of the time” sort of thing!

That's fair - these games definitely paved the way for games like Insomniac's Spider-Man and other games involving a property. Licensed games are entirely different in the industry now. I can certainly see how the Arkham games influenced that.

I can see how these probably hit harder at the time.

Are you a Batman fan? I imagine that Batman: The Animated Series nostalgia also played a big part in their popularity. It certainly did with me.

How life experience and cultural zeitgeist influence someone's enjoyment of a game, or really any form of media, is fascinating. I've played GOTYs a few years after release and was baffled that people like them. I've played others that are mid-70s at best and adored them. Batman might be like that.
