I mean, you don't really gotta mod or hack it or anything. It's runnin linux like a regular computer, just a steam flavored one. Just put it in desktop mode and go nuts with whatever you want it to do. No fancy nonsense necessary.

There is a plugin system called "Decky loader" that integrates the plugins into the SteamOS UI, but yeah otherwise it's just already blown open. Go to desktop mode, do your thing, add shortcuts, go back to game mode ez pz

It's a PC, it can do everything a normal PC can, so you don't necessarily need to 'hack' it, as it were.
