I managed to track down a behind the scenes video taken a little before this shot that gives a much better idea of the conditions that led to this photo. It also probably gives a pretty good idea as to why I had sand stuck in places I didn’t realize I could get sand stuck in 😐

Mesquite Flat is great for that. No super tall dunes like elsewhere in the park, but expansive enough that you can compress all those layers with the telephoto lens.

Oh I slapped the 70-300mm on and left my other lenses in the car so I wouldn’t even be tempted to try to switch them out in the elements 😅

I will take the grinding all day for what the wind brings to the party. Those wisps at the top of dunes and the cleaning up of footprints are well worth the aggravation. I took a shower with my tripod as I disassembled it and cleaned it out after my dune session. Same after ocean sessions.

Quickly cleaning up the footprints was a huge bonus. The only reason I hesitated was because I was in the middle of a 5-week cross-country road trip and I needed to make sure all my gear still worked for the last leg of the trip, but that still wasn’t enough of a deterrent 😬
