Democrats should also acknowledge that seeking a middle ground with a man who calls immigrants “animals” and says he will “protect” women “whether the women like it or not” is unlikely to land in a good place.

In fact, Biden admin DID get some bipartisan wins e.g. Infrastructure & CHIPS, that had eluded Obama. But even if they hadn't,his promise to do this was good electoral politics, because by definition swing voters aren't very partisan and most don't like conflict. Critics didn't get this then or now.

Studies show there IS an electoral penalty for extremism. The odds that a detectable share of voters know about or remember any particular instance are usually poor, but there is a cumulative effect.

Having (accurately) campaigned on “Trump is a fascist,” I think business-as-usual bipartisanship now makes Ds look like politically motivated liars who don’t really mean anything they say — just as Trump claimed. No one pays me for political advice, but the electoral upside isn’t obvious to me.

A lot of voters would say "maybe we don't like him, but he won and it's better when people work together." That's how people think. "We have to be consistent with our campaign rhetoric" has never been all that big deal for voters.

My view is authoritarian liars like the current GOP extremists are very far from business as usual and should not be normalized.
