I work in k-12 STEM ed, and HHMI is a wonderful institution. When I taught HS biology, I used their resources regularly. Here's an example:

What shocks me most, as an outsider scientist from Germany, is that all the “inclusivity in STEM” rhetoric in the U.S. turned out to be nothing more than a thin facade—one that can be stripped away in the blink of an eye, with almost no resistance. Civilization is an exceedingly fragile veneer.

Promoting inclusivity in STEM education and DEI are not illegal. However, stealing social security numbers, the Government's financial records and personal information of federal workers, retired fed employees, veterans, Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security recipients, is illegal.

I live in Dallas, Texas. My daughter graduated from medical school at UT Southwestern. So many of her brilliant classmates had National funding for research.
These were smart, hardworking women.

I'm a little confused. What is meant by inclusivity in STEM related areas? I didn't think gender was a problem and surely mental disability would be a contraindication. What were the programs that affected your friends? Actual research or human resources?

They cut a lot but I was interested in exactly what is the inclusiveness program. Encouraging entry to STEM courses in school, widening interest is the more difficult streams or introduction of quotas in employment? The latter not necessarily a good thing.

Mental disability a contraindication? Gross. There are lots of people who have varied abilities who can absolutely contribute brilliant work in science and engineering, especially in systems which let their talents shine. There are tons of examples out there of neurodivergent scientists.

Here is an example: it’s a huge educational benefit for undergrads to perform independent research outside of their lab courses. Not all undergrads know this, and savvy students who have more free time get spots early on.

Undergrads often work for free. A program that pays undergrad researchers a stipend means that undergrads don’t have to chose between a job that pays their bills and one that helps them professionally. A program that pays for undergrad-specific projects means more spots available.

The system as it is tends to exclude students with less money and parents who didn’t attend college or didn’t major in science. Also, having the implicit path to a better education made explicit helps students who don’t know how to get a lab position.

At this time all NIH & NSF funding is frozen by executive order. The CDC & NIH are muzzled by executive order. Human Resources or EOE has nothing to do with these.

Physgal's comment referred to a program aimed at boosting inclusivity in STEM. That's what I'm interested in detail about. I would think it would be directed to human resources; factors influencing the nature of and subsets within the overall STEM personnel set.
