From Deadline: “Olivia Hussey Eisley, the actress who shot to fame as one of the star-crossed lovers in Franco Zeffirelli’s controversial Romeo and Juliet in 1968, died peacefully today at home surrounded by her loved ones, according to a post on her Instagram page. She was 73.”
Always Juliet to me. No other. I was in a Catholic HS. We saw the movie for Honors English. Had to get parental permissions to both leave school & see movie. It was a BEAUTIFUL walk from the top of the hill down through historic neighborhoods (Mayor Pete would buy a house here) to the theatre.✨
The Shakespearean Old School sniffed at teenagers playing Romeo and Juliet, but even as an old woman, I can watch Olivia and Leonard bring the young lovers alive and marvel at their performances. Their youthful energy and passion make the ending 1000x more poignant than older actors could do.
OMG I just saw her for the first time in Black Christmas. Her performance in that film was so much better than it needed to be. It made me want to check out more of her work. RIP
I identified with Olivia Hussey. I went to see the movie by myself. My husband had recently left me, and I was grieving horribly. The intense love between the couple consoled me, even uplifted me out of my grief a bit. It was one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen.
She was such an amazing advocate for rescue animals. I saw her commenting on many rescue and shelter pages on Instagram. She seemed like a very beautiful soul. May she rest in peace.
