I know this is a tanget, but

Many fire departments will actually install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors for free if you ask them.

Just saying, having a well placed smoke/carbon monoxide detector is never a bad thing

Your experience may vary, but I've seen fire departments host open houses, usually over the summer or in October (because that's fire prevention month)

And they have booths with first responders and community organizers. They usually have these "file of life" things they give away.
