In the UK, you can borrow ebooks on Kobo devices from libraries… And they usually match Shamazon’s Kindle deals (for big books). I have a Kobo and wouldn’t swap it for a Kindle (I don’t support Shamazon), though I still favour paper books unless I’m travelling.
I tried kobo as a reader (the app, not one of their devices) and liked it. It was a better priced deal than Amazon (could get unlimited ebooks and audiobooks for cheaper) and authors who opt-in to their subscription model don’t have to be exclusive. Only con was less books available.
I was thinking about this too, but NetGalleys are a big consideration for me and they are switching to LCP DRM which currently isn't supported by Kobo. It's on Kobo's roadmap but no firm date. Something to be aware of if you want to read NG on it.
Thanks! That's a big factor for me, too. At the moment, it's more an anti-amazon choice than that my device *needs* updated, so in theory, I'd still have the Kindle for NG, just be buying less from the 'Zon. I want to be really sure the outlay is worth it, though.
I made the switch from a kindle paperwhite to a Kobo elipsa 2e and couldn't be happier. The only con for me was that I couldn't transfer all of my kindle library—a handful of books—because of the file type. For some reason calibre couldn't reformat them.
I love my Kobo and would never go back to kindle. The layout, imo, is so much nicer and feels easier to use. I love that it has Pocket, so I can read articles I've saved on there. The Dropbox sync is great, it can also sync with Google drive. I can also take notes and annotate on mine.
