For several years. It's very annoying. They are still using the old PDF with the old rules. Idk if it's intentional. You can call them and they will tell you it's not needed.

So first you fill out the GRC1 form. Write yr previous name, then yr new name. Be aware there is a limited amount (20 characters total) for first names. I was told anything over that wouldn't show up on docs. You also get 20 characters for a surname. Fill in yr deets, then it's time to notarise. ✨

Next, you need to have yr form notarised (witnessed) by a solicitors or notary public. Some orgs might have a notary public who can sign it for free. I got a solicitor. Called around, asked how much to notarise a GRC. Anything over €20 is too much. Bring deadname ID. They sign & stamp the GRC form.

Once you have the notarised form, you send it off with the documents listed, usually just a birth cert if you're an Irish citizen. The rules changed a few years ago, so YOU DO NOT NEED a deed poll/ proof of using a name for 2 years. Bafflingly, they never updated the PDF to reflect the changes.

If you have any questions, call the number on the form. They are super helpful. Sorry I don't have more info outside of my experience as an Irish citizen, but maybe others can chime in if they do. Once yr GRC is processed, your name/ gender will be automatically changed on the PPS system.

You can set up an appointment at yr local Intreo office. If you call the number on the GRC form they can also set it up for you, potentially quicker. I'd recommend bringing a ring light to Intreo bc their overhead fluorescent lighting is a crime against photography.

I believe they snail mail out yr new PPS to you in a couple of days. Once this is done you can start on applying for a passport which is what you need for a lot of banks and stuff. You need to change your name on the voting registry and birth cert (if desired) separately. And bam you did it!

Probably not if you were born in the North. You basically need to have an Irish birth cert, or be on the Foreign Birth Register.
