I know you'd prefer to keep it simple but we need to make room for complexity. Identity politics should not be the only political lens we use, but neither should we discard it for its occasionally uncomfortable implications.
Per your comment and this definition, how can we uplift marginalized people if we aren't able to speak of them without upsetting folks who are sensitive to identity politics?
Per Wikipedias - Identity politics is politics based on a particular identity, such as ethnicity, race, nationality, religion, denomination, gender, sexual orientation, social background, political affiliation, caste, age, education, disability, opinion, intelligence, and social class.
Identity politics is politics, but the term has become poisoned in the mind of some folks. Gotta find ways to speak to folks who may have their definitions contorted.
Absolutely. I tend to think the better way to frame this to layfolks is that politics are personal. Can't afford groceries? That's personal, that's politics. Cops harass a trans person for using the bathroom? That's a diminisment of agency/personal power, thereby it is political.
