I lived in India for half my life and when I moved back here over 9 years ago a lot of people were going back to school after being laid off. I caught a lot of shit in college from older returning students. I'm getting flashbacks.

Like, yes, Indians have benefitted from model minority status but also: I'm Sikh. Post 9/11 my community dealt with bigotry from all sides. Just 12 years ago we had a mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and we deal with discrimination inside of our native country as well.

I still remember the murder of Balbir Singh Sodhi just days after the attacks.

A genuine fear that bigots would randomly target Sikhs years afterwards for "looking Muslim". It started so quickly after 9/11!

Modern Conservatism requires there to be an enemy to blame all of its shortcomings on as a distraction while they plunder wealth from behind the backs of the distracted. From the Left, to trans people, to racial minorities. A world view dependent on othering people and it sucks ass.

Somewhat to your point about what we don't know, Desiquest was a highlight of my year. The way you weaved the story, as well as small things like the translation graphics, felt like a gift to someone like me who has no real knowledge or experience of your culture. I’m British and obviously grew up exposed to Indian culture. Mixed in school, etc. I now live in the US and things seem much more segregated here. Nobody learns about other peoples. UK wasn’t perfect, and is now being swept up in US politics as well.

America is better for our immigrants. I work in tech and work with a lot of folks from all over the world - including India - and they all bring something different to the table. I’m sorry people suck and don’t see it.

Yeah, unfortunately this can and does happen with a lot of different people. As an EU citizen it was fun to live through Brexit in the UK as a Schroedinger’s immigrant, who took all the jobs from British people an also got all the jobless benefits at the same time…
