Most of the trade of EU countries is within the EU. The extra-EU trade is lower, about 20 %. Still higher than for the USA, but gives you a less distorted perspective to assess the impact of a trade war.

That assumes that a trade war with the US does not have any knockoff effect on intraeurope trade, or trade with other countries, which is arguable.
