People often think NIMBYs are primarily motivated by their home value, when in truth that’s at most a secondary motivation for most of them, and indeed they would actively sink their home’s value to avoid seeing things change

in fact most NIMBYs are depressing their home values, because they own land that would be worth *more* if you could build apartments on it. there are some exceptions, but I doubt there are many in LA.

That being said, they don’t understand this. NIMBYs would also pay less in taxes with more natural development and a larger base making city services more efficient (or get more service for the same taxes), but most think new development means their taxes will go up. This is the complaint I see.

In particular, the most frequent complaint I saw when my town upzoned under protest after the state essentially pointed a gun at our heads was that our schools were full and that letting more kids in the town would mean a multimillion dollar school renovation project.

I didn’t know how to answer them because, while I know that this is not the case in many places being upzoned, our town’s superintendent of schools had minutes before complained of overcrowding in the elementary schools. I suspect he is right, and even if he is wrong I had no chance of proving that.

i guess insurance companies refusing to put up with this will have to provide these people the proper incentive to avoid rebuilding. good luck getting a policy on this shit
