Native Canadians were treated horribly until not so long ago. Most Canadians,including myself,and educated 55 yr old,were unaware of truly how bad it was for Indigenous ppl until recently.We thought Cdns were better than that.We weren’t.

6/9 The first armed confrontation occurred at Duck Lake, where Métis forces under Gabriel Dumont defeated a contingent of North-West Mounted Police and armed settlers. The Métis were successful, but this marked the beginning of open conflict.

(April 24, 1885)

At Fish Creek, Gabriel Dumont’s tactical brilliance helped a smaller Métis force ambush and halt a larger Canadian militia unit. Dumont's leadership in guerrilla warfare was crucial in this early victory.

I went to Batoche 2 summers ago, and I strongly encourage everyone to go and see it and learn more about the Metis Resistance. It was inspiring and heartbreaking. Also, while you're in Sask, go to Waneskewin Heritage Park. 6000+ years of Northern plains settlement. Reconciliation matters!

Thanks for the thread. Appreciated. Great info to update my knowledge. Have been getting better reading Canadian history with books by Stephen Bown on CPR, Hudson's Bay Co., and D'arcy Jenish on David Thompson. Neither hold back on whole truth how Metis, Indigenous were treated. Sure there are more.

Thank you for this thread. All we were ever taught about Riel in 1970s high school in Montreal was that he was "French." I look forward to reading more of these.

Thanks, Sassy, for taking time to shine a light on these important events in our history. I was raised with stories about this stuff. But am always amazed how few people have heard any more than Riel was a crazy criminal.
