While this is certainly nice, I'm willing to bet this was introduced to try prevent the reselling of stolen phones, making them harder to crack and reset for sale or something. Eh, Apple actually really hates law enforcement cracking their phones. It's one of the few things they are on the side of consumers for, since cops breaking in weakens their security claims

I’m under no illusions that Apple is a *good* company or anything but they have consistently resisted law enforcement efforts to unlock iPhones for them. So this isn’t necessarily unprecedented.

This is one of those “it can be two things” things. Apple has an obvious market interest in making their devices more secure against theft and scammers. They also have a history of not letting deference to law enforcement prevent factor into their choices, technical or otherwise.

Whatever the driving motivation for this functionality, it’s clearly fucking with the cops. And I’m sure that was identified during the design stage. And clearly Apple decided that was irrelevant.

And in 2024 I’ll settle for a company that gives cops interest that much value.

Your average phone thief these days might just be involved in identity theft, scams, CC fraud, etc., and have connections to people with the technology to unlock iPhones in AFU state, so it is a data security measure, not just to prevent theft and resale. Activation lock already makes that difficult
