I don't know the details for how effective the current proposals are but, the intent is very righteous. Design for obsolescence bothers me. Designing a product to become useless in order to sell the next version needs to be stopped.

Can't think of anything against this, except it puts a limit on miniaturization and closed-shell products. Apple, in particular, won't be happy. But they have never wanted to make modular products that people could open up or customize.

one thing I don't see outlets mention though: I've yet to see a single action taken against a major company in any of the states that have passed right to repair laws.

And with Trump 2.0 creating costly state legal battles across an ocean of subjects, I suspect enforcement won't be a priority.

It's worse than that. The contracts suck, yes, but the problems get really bad when equipment breaks down during critical phases of farming like harvest or planting where there's a narrow window in which to accomplish the task. And, those are the times when farmers run 24/7, which, of course, means

If it happens during grain harvest they can lose their entire crop. that's a 6 figure hit. grain has a narrow window in terms of moisture content. too high and it'll spoil.

equipment is more likely to break. And it's those times when other farmers have repair calls in, so JD often can't get a tech out. It's this negative reinforcement cycle that is the worst of it.
