I know people like these free ad-laden streaming services but it's hilarious to me we put all that time, money, and energy into innovation and just wound up with a shitter, lazier version of broadcast TV?

I get where you’re coming from
100%, but there is also a phenomenal amount of cromulent distraction to be found on Tubi and Pluto.
(and there are barely more ads than the base level of Prime serves up) Death to the brunch lords etc, but that.
some of them aren't terrible (many of them are), but the siren call of enshittification at this scale will increasingly erode the value proposition until it's like 60% shitty ads
One thing I have never gotten over, concerning TV: way back when cable companies were making deals to ensure monopoly access to neighborhoods, their chief PR pitch was "Since you're paying a subscription, there won't be any ads!"
Most of these FAST channels don't really make any money and fold super quick anyway. It is extremely hard to get any revenue in such a saturated market
I was saaying this at home yesterday. You can't find anything good to casually watch, and free TV is so crap now its hardly worth putting on. Thanks techbros..
I think I've discovered the appeal. I make decisions all day. When I watch one of these, I just want my brain to rot and someone else do the thinking for me. Plus streaming services are getting hella expensive. Choose your own adventure is pricey. Ads are annoying but I've tuned them out.
Ditto. And they get *extremely* repetitive. We need curated playlists for TV watching on all of the major streaming services, sort of like how you can share playlists on services like Spotify. Then it's the best of both worlds. No ads and no thought involved.

They hoover up everything and yet zero consequences.
I refuse.

But it still beats 4 channels and a coat hanger on a b&w set.
"Oh wait, we've just invented trains"
I think they've actually backed away from some of this in recent months
what could go wrong
but I find the dodgy ads annoying and it makes me want to not watch TV
