Obvious Ultrakill mention is obvious
Hakita cooks up all time masterpieces even when he forgets to make a boss theme for one of the most important fights in the game and has to speedrun a boss fight theme within 24 hours.
I'm a big fan of the Shrine Battle music. Ryuichi Sakamoto's M.A.Y in the backyard (Call me by your name soundtrack) is similar and when I watched the film, I thought I was back in a shrine 😭
The music in Mafia is absolutely fantastic! It perfectly sets the tone for the game, capturing the 1930s atmosphere with every note. It’s not just background sound, it’s a key part of the experience
Hell, yes. There are CDs of video game soundtracks that I specifically ordered, bought, and still play now and then - it's a great way to turn on a faucet of endorphins
Extra credit to the composers who had to work with a limited sound palette in early tech. Many amazing, iconic tracks were made with nothing more than 8-bit bleeps and bloops.
Sound designers too. Watching videos of how creators make sounds for movie, tv, games, has made me really appreciate how wildly creative some people are. Very inspiring
Most people my age at work have no clue what I mean when I said I used to stream on Twitch or how big e-sports is, let alone VGM. It's nice to always have a fun world to share though, show them something new.
It’s a great game that got too much hate back in the day for not being Suikoden 2. I still think it has the best story in the series, and the way you play through it (Trinity Sight system) is far more interesting than the usual silent protagonist route.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNGqBDRJgvo I racked up over 100 hours on this game, at least 20 of which were probably spent just getting tf down in my undies. Not even one track felt tired by the time I was done.
Video game music is some of my favorite. It has a way of bringing you back to your time playing the game. Some of my favorite game soundtracks are shadow of the colossus, skyrim, halo and oblivion.
Balatro has one song in loop and it’s fucking fire! Stardew Valley jams are such a fuckin vibe! Spell Brigade has that fire soundtrack! Indies be cooking for real!
Totally. I have entire playlists of music from video games. When you actually take the time to listen to the music outside the action of games you often find many gems. Even on lesser known mobile dacha games (Genshin, Star Rail) they have entire orchestras making music for them.
Dragon age Veilguard has one of the BEST video game scores imo. What do you mean the tapped both HANS ZIMMER AND LORNE BALF?
Next on my list would be Assassins Creed, God of War also slaps. More recent games would be Baldurs gate (night songs theme always gives me goosebumps)
I've never played Alan Wake personally, but I have gotten to know Old Gods of Asgard which is a band made just for that universe, the actual band's name is Poets of The Fall and I think the entire premise is fascinating (and the music is good!)
GTAV's Trevor wanted theme, Outlast's male ward chase, and Epic Mickey's Oswald theme first come to mind. I'm not a huge gamer, but you're not wrong either.
Loads of games ('specially indies) knock out wonderful soundtracks, but I don't think any genre was kicked as hard as when Sonic Mayhem did the Quake 2 soundtrack.
It can elevate a game beyond its direct interactions. You can have creepy string music playing softly in the background as you creep around in a survival horror game that builds tension without you even noticing until the jumpscare comes. Even though nothing has happened minor keys gonna get you!
The soundtracks for God of War, Horizon: Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, RD2 (just to name a few) absolutely are incredible. They are worth listens independently of the game.
Truuuuue I fell in love with Spyro music. So much so in fact when I started watching Dead Like Me I knew right away it was from the same composer, Stewart Copeland of The Police!

Do you know how long I spent searching for this non-existent show? Too long. And it's the fact I STILL want this to be a series.
Check out the manga if you haven’t read it!
TOP TIER!

Like their use of French horn and combination of the two unique composing styles absolutely has my heart.
It had one of the greatest electronic soundtracks I’ve ever heard.
Super underrated. These folks deserve way more recognition! 🫡
