Sentience is not consciousness. Has become a rabbit hole of philosophy and AI. Best guess is that consciousness is an evolved process that evolved to produce behavioral efficiencies. Sentience, although part of this process, gives no evolutionary or behavioral insights.
... Somewhat ironic, the animal studies that likely do reveal conscious processing are behavioral and give no evidence of sentience. What they don't do is give a unified notion of the behavioral efficiencies produced by consciousness.
