I suspect it's because they dont have the review process over their terminations that a long term employee does. A lot of them dont have a backlog of good evaluations that they can point to as evidence of unfair termination. So basically they get cleared like a field with a scythe.

Also, they may be new to their positions but they aren’t necessarily new to the government or their fields. Employees who change agencies or take on supervisory positions usually have to go through another trial period regardless of prior experience. Many highly experienced folks were fired.

Could have severe impact on VA and DOD hospital patient care, and nursing is usually understaffed at best. Nursing always has lots of turnover. New hires are usually night shift, could be decimated.

For those who dont hv understanding. New to positions does not mean unqualified or entry level. Thy are post-docs, PhDs, MS, BS & many other qualified folks who may hv just finally found a perm Fed job. These are not disposable positions. Thy all matter. I'm told that probation also affects those who are promoted to new positions - so someone with 15 years who has been promoted and therefore on probation, is also being fired. We're losing years of institutional knowledge.

probationaries are ALSO the only way the the Nuclear establishment keeps working also.. one a worker exceeds their lifetime limit of exposure thats the end of working directly with radioactive materials.. Nuclear needs a constant stream of fresh faces for labs, machinists, weapons specialists etc
