This time of the year always brings up memories of working in the emergency room when Covid hit. I remember getting berated by “infection control” for wearing a mask while I was the only nurse in triage for the bulk of my shift in a busy city ER..

We all knew what was going on overseas so we knew how bad it could get and it did get. I’ll never forget the experience of working in healthcare during a pandemic and I fear for the upcoming years with leaders in charge who don’t even believe in science and put profit over people.
I’ll never forget the feeling of abandonment that from hospital admin and other floors. A nurse got sent home for bringing her own PPE at the beginning because she wanted to protect herself and her family and hospice patients from her other job. They didn’t want us to scare the patients with masks.
I had two young kids at home. There were times when Covid positive people just got stuck in the ER for days because the hospital wasn’t sure what to do with them yet. They set up a tent outside. Covid didn’t stop the influx of other types of patients we got on a regular basis.
but I watch the news and I wasn’t taking any chances with the influx of respiratory viruses we were seeing. This was before we had a Covid test. I’ll never forget assisting w my first respiratory distress putting an OG tube in after intubation, and being notified later that a CT scan showed Covid.
