One of the things that struck me at the #StandUpForScience event was how many of the organizers and speakers were women. I have noticed this throughout this mess. Many of the folks who have reached out to me here or on Signal are women (if I know their gender).

I am lucky to be the son of a strong accomplished woman although you probably wouldn’t have known this meeting her. She earned her MD in 1951 as a woman (and a Jewish woman to boot). She was bright and opinionated, but relatively soft-spoken.

My mom, Judith Nadell Berg, the year before I was born.

She went on to do hematology research at Stanford (until her boss’s grant did not get funded), to work on a drug approval for a pharma company, to do primary care at a state hospital for the developmentally disabled, and to teach English to immigrant women through the local public library.

She accomplished this despite a challenging upbringing. She was born in 1926, but her mom suffered from serious mental illness and was institutionalized when my mom was young. Her father was struggling as a young lawyer in the depression and my mom when off to boarding school in 6th grade.

When my mom was 16, her father divorced my grandmother and remarried. Mom’s new stepmother wanted little to do with her and Mom became largely independent upon HS graduation. Nonetheless, she put herself through NYU, married by father, and then attended Downstate Medical School in Brooklyn.

She, herself, suffered with bipolar disorder and my childhood was punctuated by suicide attempts including one that she almost did not survive just after my 2nd year in college. She found a good doc and responded well to lithium and lived another 21 years, and met all 6 of her grandchildren.
