Also as you seem to know more: does alt text make sense for an account posting only "artistic" photos? I mean, if you can't see the picture then the description does not really help... or are there conditions where they do see, but the description still helps in contextualising?

A principle with access improvements for disabled people is 'we want to be able to access what other people can - as far as possible'. Where an image is of text, a screen reader won't read out the text, so that person can't access it.

While someone will be unable to see, or at least not clearly, ⬇️

an artistic image that is partly realistic, as this one is, they may want to know that it is an image of a naked person and a short description of the changes that have been made to go along with the info about the project, which they'll have from the main part of the text.

the image, the less point there is trying to describe it. It is enough to write that it's an abstract image - if the materials have been important to the artist, they might want to say something about them too.

Really, the text should be quite short and clear. Don't try to create something poetic ⬇️

Really, it's about letting others join in, or at least understand that they've not been left out even if a description isn't meaningful.

Thanks! Yes I am committed to alt text, to the point of setting the "don't allow to post without alt text" option, trying to improve but unfortunately I had the description as a figure and posted like this. Can't edit I fear, so will be more careful..

Yep - it's a pain not being able to edit posts. Tbh, I found it a bit of a drag to start with, now I'm quite enjoying thinking what I might say. And if that is nothing more than, "an abstract image of paint splats on concrete", it's because I've decided that is what I want to express.

someone who likes my photos of people ask me to write more about their bodies - I thought about it, and I said no. That's not being unhelpful, it's cos I decided it wasn't right for me to comment on someone's body size etc.. some visual images need to speak for themselves.

Really I think it's most useful when a graphic contains text as screen readers won't read that out. I'm not sure how useful my descriptions are of my photos, but they only take me 30 seconds and if that helps someone, I'm pleased to do it 🙂
