I don't understand the pessimism. Ukraine has fought the Russian army to a stalemate with just a fraction of the EUs military power. Energy independence is within their grasp.

As an American living here and hoping to stay, if Europe could muster a fraction of the American balls-out "LET'S FUCKIN' GOOOOO" vibes we'd be having very different geopolitical conversations. Too much European-ness is academic esoterica and not the values-based action that could be EU's sweet spot

There is no doubt that Europe can do it. However, the issue is that Europeans do not trust other Europeans. Traditionally we have trusted the US and thus accepted US leadership. Until things gets really dangerous, it will be very difficult to build the necessary level of cooperation.

In addition, the difference in economic output inside Europe is huge. Northern Europe is doing ok, Eastern Europe still developing and Southern Europe is largely a story of mismanagement. That makes a common policy on many issues a hard sell.

Also an American planning to stay and I just don’t get it either. There’s a ton to be proud of and to defend. The reluctance to do what you suggest just compounds any real problems.
