This works right up to the point where wire is being spliced together in a junction box that has been plastered in. Then you get to do some exploratory surgery to walls to find that junction box, and hope that it's in a similar place in other rooms you have to re-wire.
most electric code doesn't allow junction boxes to be sealed in a wall, with all wire splices required to be in an accessible junction box. so just follow that rule and you'll be fine.
